Lions
Lions and other Large Cats in African Art
For years we were told that Shona, Ndebele and other African art carvers were not partial to lions in general. Lions in their natural state often tend to feed on cattle and other domesticated animals as these are easier to hunt than zebra and other animals native to the bushveldt in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Malawi. And then there is the occasional lion or pride of lions that develop a taste for the most slow moving of game – man himself! The situation among the artists has changed and we are now seeing some very attractive renderings of lions, as well as some wonderful leopards and other large cats.
